About the Department
The Department of English in Jorhat Kendriya Mahavidyalaya came into existence along with the establishment of the college in 1981with the first batch of students in the Higher secondary level. The UG course was introduced in the College from the academic session 1984-85. For six academic sessions since the establishment of Degree-level in the College, English remained a general subject for study. Honours course was introduced in 1996 with one private student. It was only from the session 1998-1999 that the course could function on a regular basis. The founding faculty members of the department whose dedication and nurture lent a strong foundation to the department were Mr. Lakhi Borah (1981-1990), Mr. Ashok Kumar Raj (1981-1991), late Mr. Tirtha Nath Sharma Baruah (1985-1995), Late. Mr. Deepak Dutta (1990-1996) and Ms. Rekhamoni Dutta (1995-2002). At present there are three permanent and one contractual faculty in the department. The department offers honours and non-honours courses in the regular mode at the UG level and offers Pass course at the UG level and PG in the distance mode. The learning environment is enforced by earnest endeavours taken to ensure the quality and progress of students. Assignments, Seminars and group discussions are set in line with the academics. Remedial classes, peer learning, mentoring and student centric participatory learning attempt to bring out the best in the students. The department has been able to show good results.

Works of literature, at their best, provide a kind of blueprint of human society. From the writings of ancient civilizations such as Greece, Rome, India to Greek philosophy and poetry, from the epics of Homer to the plays of William Shakespeare, from Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte to Toni Morrison, works of literature give insight and context to all the world's societies. In this way, literature is more than just a historical or cultural artifact; it broadens horizons and helps develop new perspectives.
By asserting the relevance of the literary arts, critical and creative thinking, and effective communication skills, we prepare our students to be flexible, able to read culture, and engage with different perspectives. By doing so, we want to empower our students to make informed decisions that benefit their communities and themselves, and to communicate these decisions effectively in written and oral contexts.
