About the Department

The Department of Zoology in Jorhat Kendriya Mahavidyalaya established in 1992, with the department first imparting classes at the higher secondary level. Undergraduate education (BSc) course, with Zoology as a general subject was introduced in the College from the academic session 1994-95, owing to the increasing demand from student community in the adjoining areas. Honours course was introduced in 2010 with a batch of six students. Ely Phukan is the founding faculty member of the department who has been serving relentlessly since 1992 till date. At present there are three permanent and two contractual faculty in the department. The department offers honours courses in the regular mode at the UG level and also Generic Elective (GE) in B.Sc.(H)course . The Department of Zoology downright fosters the inquisitive minds of students who are a part of various programs by holding group discussions, intercollege seminars, workshops in addition to regular coursework. Student Enrichment programs, cocurricular activities like departmental magazine publication, innovative teaching methods like audio visual method, online classes, remedial classes etc. provide better learning opportunities for students.

Vision & Mission

Zoology is basically the science of all the fauna surrounding us. Right from the microscopic bacteria to the huge blue whales, Zoology encompasses the detailed anatomy, physiology, chemistry of these organisms. Zoology also caters to the recent advances in biotechnology and genetics.

The goal of the department is to not only impart coursework to the students. It is envisioned to inspire the students to explore these myriad of fields. The department endeavors to prepare the students to compete in the outside world and to make informed career decisions.
