About the Department

The Department of Economics at Jorhat Kendriya Mahavidyalaya was established along with the inception of the college in 1981, with the first batch of students enrolled at the Higher Secondary level. The Undergraduate (Non-Honours) course in Economics was introduced during the academic session 1984–85. Subsequently, the Honours course was introduced in 1990–91 and received permission from Dibrugarh University vide letter no. DU/R.G./IC/Perm.96-98 dated 11/01/1996.

The teachers associated with the establishment and development of the department were Dr. Anil Kr. Saikia, Mrs. Minoti Khound, Ms. Rumi Chetia, Ms. Inu Saikia, and Mr. Popibul Boruah. Their sincere efforts and dedication laid a strong foundation for the department.

At present, the department has three permanent faculty members and one contractual faculty member. They are:

  • Mr. Amar J. Bordoloi, Associate Professor & Head of the Department
  • Mr. Arup Kumar Mahanta, Associate Professor
  • Miss Pallabi Hazarika, Assistant Professor

The department also offers Postgraduate classes in Distance Mode under Dibrugarh University. The learning environment of the department is highly conducive to ensuring the academic quality and overall progress of the students.

The department follows student-centric teaching methods. Various evaluation methods adopted by the department include sessional examinations, seminars, group discussions, field projects, class tests, home assignments, tutorials, oral tests, and interactive student participation activities.

Economic Study Centre

The Department of Economics established the Economic Study Centre in 2002 with the objective of promoting academic and co-curricular activities for the overall development of students. The Centre organizes various programmes such as seminars, popular talks, quizzes, debates, field studies, educational tours, excursions, and publications. It also aims to study the socio-economic problems and economic issues of the people living in the surrounding areas of the college.
