The Department of Economics in Jorhat Kendriya Mahavidyalaya came into existence along with the establishment of the College in 1981with first batch of students in the Higher Secondary Level. The UG (Non Honours) course was introduced in the college from the academic session 1984-85. Honours course was introduced in 1990-91 and received permission from Dibrugarh University vide letter no DU/R.G/ ic/Perm.96-98, dated11/1/96. The teachers who were associated with the establishment of the department- Dr Anil Kr Saikia, Mrs Minoti Khound, Rumi Chetia, Inu Saikia and Popibul Boruah. They have nurtured lent a strong foundation of the department. At present there are three permanent and one contractual faculty in the department. They are- Mr Arup Kr Mahanta(Associate Professor & HoD), Amarjyoti Bordoloi (Associate Professor), Dr Ananta Tamuli, (Assistant Professor) and Rangadeep Bhuyan (Contractual). The department offers PG class in the Distance Mode under Dibrugarh University. The learning environment of the department is very good to ensure the quality and progress of students.

The teaching methods are student centric. Departmental evaluation methods are sessional examinations, seminars, group discussions, field projects, class test, home assignments tutorials, and oral test and students’ interactions.

The Economic Study Centre:

The department has formed “ECONOMIC STUDY CENTRE” in 2002, with the aim to undertake various academic programmes such as Publication, Seminar, Popular Talk, Quiz, Debating, Field Tour, Excursion etc, for the benefit of the students. Further the centre aims to study the Socio-economic problems and other economic issues of the people living in the surrounding villages of the College.
